Halbert Rug Company specializes in traditional and modern design rugs made exclusively with high quality hand spun yarns and authentic natural dyes.
Rug making is a beautiful and ancient form of textile art. The oldest intact oriental rug, the Pazyryk Carpet, is more than 2,500 years old, it is one of the most prized possessions of the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia -- made with a level of technical mastery as advanced as anything made today -- we can only guess how long the art form existed prior to the making of this carpet.
Antique rugs are renowned for an almost magical way of dealing with time and use. They become more beautiful throughout the years. This ability comes from the materials used and the way they are prepared. Over the last 150 years, rug making has become more industrialized and new processes have been introduced in the name of increased efficiency and profits that have since been recognized as degradations in overall quality. Processes such as chemical washing and dying along with machine carding and spinning of the yarn were introduced in the mid 1800’s and still dominate rug production today. In fact, about 90% of current rug production around the world still uses these non-traditional processes. When you see and feel our rugs you will understand the importance of traditional methods and why they are synonymous with quality. |
Halbert Rug Company works exclusively with weaving projects that have returned to traditional ways of wool preparation and weaving to produce new rugs that look, feel and perform the same as rugs made hundreds of years ago.
By following traditional methods, our weavers create rugs made of healthy intact wool fibers that are able to stand the test of time. The carpets have unique and wonderful color variations throughout with striations and shading that are a result of the way handmade yarn soaks up dye unevenly. The varied surface texture comes from yarns which were spun by fingers instead of a machine in a mill.
You don't have to be an expert to appreciate the quality. When you see a rug that was made this way you will immediately recognize there is something different, something special that you have not seen before.
