Traditional
A Traditional design is the one most thought of when considering a handmade oriental, although the designs mostly originate from Persian and Turkish weaving tradition those represent just a part of the vast range of designs referred to as “Traditional”.
Traditional rugs may feature ancient designs, some well over a thousand years, that are still completely relevant today. These are some of the most versatile designs you will find and they are quintessentially timeless. You can see them used with modern interior designs and in the catalogues of top home design stores. The curvilinear floral and geometric designs of Traditional rugs work well in both casual and formal settings. They mix well with mid-century, antique, contemporary casual and cutting edge modern furniture. They are a wonderful backdrop for almost any room.

Tribal
Tribal rugs tend to be more geometric and less formal, more mathematical and intellectual than the floral Traditional designs. Their strong lines add a more casual feeling to a room. They work very well in offices, studies, great rooms and family rooms.
Tibetan
Tibetan rugs tend to be less familiar to most of us and a traditional Tibetan design can sometimes be mistaken for a modern design. This is simply because the Tibetan culture was so isolated for so long that we just aren’t familiar with their traditional designs they way we are those from Turkish, Persian or Indian culture.
That being said, most of the modern designs here at Halbert Rug Company will be Tibetan. The Tibetan weavers seem to be more open to weaving new designs, or designs from other textile traditions than some of the more conservative cultures like Persian or Afghan.
One of the most wonderful types of rugs I know of are the Tibetan folk-life rugs or “Gaon Naksha”. Each weaver creates a village scene of their own, drawing figures, buildings and trees in their own style, from their own experience making each finished piece a truly unique piece of modern textile art.

Modern
Most weaving projects produce a variety of more modern designs. Some are based on other types of textiles, some on other types of art, or they can be singular, one of a kind creations.
As noted above, most of the modern designs I carry are made by Tibetan weavers.
