Using Rugs in Dining Rooms

I get asked this question a lot.

I would not be afraid to put a handmade rug in an area where food is being served. Rugs have been being made for thousands of years for intended use on the floor.

These rugs boast incredible beauty but they are also highly durable, made to withstand rigorous use and serve the family for many generations. Tribal and nomadic cultures, from which these rugs originate, use them everywhere to add warmth and comfort in their tents and simple lodgings. It is very common to eat meals sitting on the floor with the food spread out on a blanket or tray placed over part of the rug, or simply with the food plates and platters on the rug itself.

So trust me -- if they’re good, well-made rugs they can handle it.

There are some key modern considerations and decisions that need to be made when using an oriental rug in the dining room. Today we'll focus on size.

Ideally a dining room rug is large enough to accommodate the table and chairs as well as the movement range of the chairs.

Why?

If the rug is too small, if the edges fall just beyond the table, the chairs will not shift well when someone is sitting in them. The chair will fall off the rug and get stuck then the person has to stop what they are doing and pick up their dining chair to release the rug. This can be an awkward moment that’s easy to avoid if the rug is sized generously.
But sometimes a large rug just isn’t practical. Budget may not allow for a rug large enough or there may be other constraints in the room itself that prohibit the use of a larger rug. In these cases it works well to size the rug down to fit just under the table itself, letting the chairs float.

It really comes down to what you want, what will fit and how much you are comfortable spending.

Do you use rugs in your dining room? Any stories or pictures to share? I'd love to see and hear them! Send them my way or post to our Facebook page.
